Strong thunderstorms packing damaging winds blasted through the New York City region Monday, causing flash flooding and knocking down trees.

NEW YORK (WABC) --

Strong thunderstorms packing damaging winds blasted through the New York City region Monday, causing flash flooding and knocking down trees.

The storms moved from the west through the area late Monday afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service to issue severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings for many parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

See a timelapse video in the player above showing the first round of storms move into New York City.

A tree came down in Riverside Park. Thankfully, no one was running underneath it at the time.

High winds from the storm caused a tree to come down on a home in New Jersey.

Driving home proved slow going and treacherous as roads turned into rivers in New Rochelle. Parts of the Cross Bronx Expressway were deep under the water causing long delays.

In Rosedale, Queens, on 147th Drive you could hear a babbling brook on the street as the floodwater continued to slowly drain out.

A second round of storms then moved into the NYC area about an hour later, before making its way over Long Island.

HAWTHORNE, New Jersey (WABC) -- A man in New Jersey was just feet from being hit as a tree fell into his bedroom on Monday - before strong storms were set to hit the area.

Crews worked quickly to remove the tree that pierced through the roof of a home in Hawthorne as brief showers moved through the area.

Thomas Bushnauskas was napping in his room when he was awoken by the tree.

"I just woke up to a loud bang, and then plaster in my room, and then I ran out of my room to see anything that was going on outside and my neighbor came by and was luckily calling the police for me already," he says.

Bushnauskas says he feels extremely lucky.

"It's just a scary moment, let me tell you," he adds.

Thankfully, there were no injuries.
