Lincoln resident dies following fiery crash near Bennet

BENNET, Neb. — A crash Wednesday afternoon near Bennet claimed the life of a 26-year-old from Lincoln.

According to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office, the driver was traveling westbound on Highway 2 under the Bennet corner bridge when their vehicle veered of the roadway into the grass median, struck a bridge pillar and caught fire.

LSO identified the victim as Thomas Neeley. Friends and family tell 10/11 News that Neeley identified as a transgender woman and went by Caitlyn Neeley.

Several witnesses helped pull Neeley out of the vehicle and began first aid, but Neeley was pronounced dead at the scene just before 2:00 p.m. LSO said Neeley was not wearing a seatbelt
