PILOT KILLED AFTER FIERY EXPERIMENTAL PLANE CRASH IN BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN

BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – 


Emergency crews are responding to W.K. Kellogg Airport in the City of Battle Creek after a small plane crash.

Officials tell Newschannel 3 that the crash occurred around 8:20 pm and involved a small plane with a single occupant. That plane crashed shortly after taking off, killing the pilot and sole occupant.

The W.K. Kellogg Airport is home to the WMU College of Aviation. WMU tells Newschannel 3 that the accident did not involve any people or aircraft from their college.

Officials on scene tell Newschannel 3 that the plane was a small, experimental craft. Witnesses say it had been practicing takeoffs and landings around 8:00 pm when it appeared to suffer some sort of issue, crashed and caught fire.

The plane is registered to someone in Berrien Springs. There is currently no word on where the plane was headed.

Officials from the FAA are on their way to investigate, W.K. Kellogg Airport will remain closed through the night while the investigation continues.

Narrative:
The aircraft, an experimental Barrow built One Easy, a variant of the Longeze, impacted airport terrain and a post-impact fire ensued during an attempted return to the point of departure at W K Kellogg Airport (KBTL), Battle Creek, Michigan. The canard design airplane was destroyed and the sole pilot onboard received fatal injuries.
