BSEE's Oil Spill Response Training and Testing Facility Receives Structural Improvements

JULY 21, 2015

LEONARDO, New Jersey

Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) continues to invest in infrastructure improvements and storm mitigation measures for its national oil spill response research and renewable energy test facility, Ohmsett, located in Leonardo, N.J.

Throughout 2015, the facility is being improved through the addition of a new warehouse and storm-resistant designs to prevent or reduce wind and water impacts. Other important improvements will include an emergency backup generator, elevation of electrical and other equipment above potential storm surge levels, and installation of barriers to prevent debris impacts to facility piping and other exposed infrastructure.

Ohmsett is the premier training site for oil spill response personnel and includes the nation’s largest saltwater tank used for testing oil removal technologies. It is the only facility where full-scale oil spill response equipment testing, research, and training can be conducted in a marine environment with oil under controlled environmental conditions (waves and oil types).

Many commercially available oil spill cleanup products have been tested at Ohmsett, and response planners use data collected at the facility in reviewing and approving facility response and contingency plans.

BSEE is the principal federal agency funding offshore oil spill response research, and Ohmsett is a key part of the bureau’s Oil Spill Response Research Program. The facility is also a venue for renewable energy testing with wave energy conversion devices.
