1 woman killed, 1 injured after a driver, suspected of being impaired by drugs or alcohol, drove into an oncoming vehicle in Geauga County, Ohio


NEWBURY TOWNSHIP, OHIO

One woman is dead and another woman was hospitalized after a driver, suspected of being impaired, drove into an oncoming vehicle on Saturday.

The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. on Pekin Road, west of Bass Lake Road in Geauga County.

A 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt was eastbound on Pekin Road, when it traveled left of center and collided head-on with a 2004 Chevrolet Impala traveling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Cobalt was Holly Fritz, of Burton.

Fritz was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center where she died from her injuries. Fritz was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The Impala was driven by Janet Covell, of Newbury.

Covell was also transported to MetroHealth Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Covell did have her seatbelt on during the accident.

Alcohol and drugs appear to be a factor, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash remains under investigation.
