NOWHERE SAFE: 1 MAN KILLED WHEN A SPEEDING YOUNG DRIVER REAR-ENDED HIS BOAT TRAILER AND CAUSED THE BOAT TO CRUSH HIM TO DEATH IN MICHIGAN

JUNE 4, 2015

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, MICH. (WJBK)

The Macomb County Sheriff's Department is investigating a fatal car accident in Harrison Township.

It happened Wednesday evening on Metropolitan Parkway just east of L'Anse Creuse Street.

The sheriff's office says a married couple from Clinton Township stopped in the left lane after their boat trailed became disconnected, and got out of their car to try and hook the trailer back up.

The sheriff's office says a 21-year-old man was speeding and apparently didn't see that the trailer had stopped, and crashed into the back of it. The force caused the boat to dislodge, and the husband, 29-year-old William Rainey III, was pinned underneath.

The 21-year-old's vehicle also then caught fire.

Rainey was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His wife and the driver of the other vehicle were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The sheriff's office says alcohol does not appear to be a factor at this time.   It is possible that it was dark and the boat trailer did not have lights or no flares were used to warn other drivers.  Very tragic accident.

At least 34,000 people die each and every year on the deadly U.S. roads.  This is one of the highest death rates for a "developed" economy.  Hundreds of thousands injured as well.  Nobody is safe on the roads: drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, passengers, EMS personnel, troopers, road workers, and so on we are all at risk.  So be extra careful.  The other driver will not pay much attention to you because of the texting, telephones, GPS, and so many other distractions.
