4 HURT (2 CRITICAL) IN MUNSON TOWNSHIP, OHIO FIRETRUCK, MINIVAN CRASH

MARCH 5, 2015

MUNSON TOWNSHIP, OHIO

A Munson Township firetruck was involved in an accident on its way to a house fire, said Lt. John Hiscox with the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office.

It happened on Wilson Mills Road in Munson Township Thursday afternoon.

Two vehicles were going eastbound, when the first car (a minivan) spotted the fire truck and slowed to pull over.  The second car did not slow down, according to the sheriff’s office.  It hit the back of the minivan and veered left of center, striking the fire truck head on.

The fire truck driver and the driver of the second vehicle were taken to Hillcrest Hospital in critical condition.  Two other firefighters were taken to University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center.

Failure to yield and/or slow down for ems vehicles to go to their emergency destination is a very common cause of accidents.  This accident is a rather typical scenario where one driver will fail to slow down due to inattention or plain old reckless behavior.

The high risk of ems responders is shown by the record number of injuries this winter due to the severity of the weather and number of emergencies/accidents that they had to attend to.
