ACCOMACK COUNTY, VIRGINIA (WAVY)

A tractor-trailer traveling down southbound Route 13 early Thursday morning ran off the road and flipped, falling on top a VDOT pickup truck assisting in another accident scene.

The series of events began at 3:55 a.m. State Police were called to a 3-vehicle crash on Route 13 southbound in Melfa, near Tammy & Johnny’s restaurant.  A VDOT truck, driven by Robert Isdell Jr., pulled up to the scene to assist.  Around 4:20 a.m., a 2007 International tractor-trailer, driven by Marvin Durnell, lost control, landing on Mr. Isdell’s truck, according to State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

A WAVY viewer sent in a picture from the crash scene, which shows the back of the tractor-trailer overturned onto the driver side of the VDOT truck.  Amazingly, Virginia State Police say the driver of the VDOT truck was not seriously hurt.

Paula Miller with VDOT told WAVY.com Isdell has worked for VDOT for more than 30 years. She said he reportedly has cuts to his hand from holding onto the steering wheel and was taken to the hospital complaining of back pain, but was released after a short while.

Police charged Marvin Durnell with failure to maintain lane.
