SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk man died Tuesday night, after a crash along Route 58 in Suffolk.

Around 5:30 p.m., emergency dispatchers got a call about the two-vehicle crash on eastbound Route 58, according to Tim Kelly with the city of Suffolk. Fire-rescue crews responded to the scene, near the Route 460 exit (Pruden Boulevard).

Kelly said a vehicle drove into the back of a tow truck that was there handling a previous crash. The driver, 76-year-old William Emery, was seriously injured. He was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he later died.

There were no other injuries.

Both eastbound lanes were closed on Route 58, but have since reopened.

We have reported in other blogs of the risks posed to tow truck drivers, highway troopers, EMS personnel, etc  from drivers that either never slow down near an accident scene or are distracted from the scene and end up causing a second wreck.
