Hazard mitigation is any action taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from natural disasters and hazards. This includes measures ranging from building safely within a floodplain, removing homes from high hazard areas, and engineering buildings and other infrastructure to withstand earthquakes, to name only a few examples.
