PRINCETON, WV (WVNS) –

UPDATE:  Princeton Police have released the identity of a construction worker who was killed in an accident on Monday afternoon.  The victim was identified as Robert Thomason.
Investigators said Mr. Thomason worked for the city on a part-time basis.

ORIGINAL STORY: One person is dead after a tree fell on an excavator.  Officials told 59News the accident happened behind Princeton Towers on Stafford Drive.
The victim was driving the excavator at the time. Princeton Rescue Squad responded to the scene.

The Princeton Police Department, Princeton Fire Department and Princeton Rescue Squad were at the scene Monday of a reported accident behind the Princeton Towers apartment building off Stafford Drive.

City employee confirmed dead in backhoe accident

PRINCETON, WV–
A Princeton city official confirmed Tuesday that a city employee died Monday in an accident behind Princeton Towers along Stafford Drive.
City Manager Michael V. Webb said the man was a part-time city employee. When the accident occurred, he was clearing city property located behind the Princeton Tower’s apartment building. The project is part of the city’s plans to turn the former Dean Company factory into a new municipal complex.
The victim was identified as Robert “Bobby” Thomason, according to Captain B.R. Woodard of the Princeton Police Department.
The accident was reported at approximately 2 p.m. Monday after a tree struck and damaged a backhoe. The Princeton Police Department, Princeton Fire Department and the Princeton Rescue Squad responded. The incident is still under investigation.

Bobby's Obituary

 
Bobby D. Thomason, age 67, of Bluefield, WV passed away on Monday, August 27, 2018 from an accident in Princeton, WV at his job site.

Born on October 25, 1950, in Princeton, WV, he was a son of the late Billy D. and Ruth O’Donnell Thomason. He was employed by the City of Princeton. He was a hard worker and had worked in construction all of his adult life. 

He had a passion for running heavy equipment, a job at which he excelled. He was also a former employee for Jack Davidson’s Construction, Compton Construction and for Dick Preservati. 

He also loved working on the farm with his brother, Richard. He was a graduate of Princeton High School and was a member of the Smith’s Chapel Church of the Brethren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Hope Thomason and a brother, Randolph Thomason.
