30,000 pounds of milk spilled when milk tanker truck driver 36-year-old Ronnie Hare of Poughkeepsie, lost control of the tractor-trailer owned by Staats Transporting Inc., of Milan, rolled over twice and went off the right shoulder of the roadway on State Route 82

ANCRAM, N.Y. (WRGB) -

A milk tanker overturned on State Route 82 on Friday, causing 30,000 pounds of milk to spill onto the ground.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office says the driver, 36-year-old Ronnie Hare of Poughkeepsie, lost control of the tractor-trailer when it went off the right shoulder of the roadway.

Deputies say the tractor-trailer then overturned, rolling over two times before coming to rest. Hare was airlifted to Albany Med with neck, chest and abdomen injuries. There no passengers.

These milk tanker trucks are so easy to rollover if the driver is not carefull when he turns or swerves.  The trucks can tolerate only a very small g, less than 0.2, due to the sloshing load.

ANCRAM, NY —

The driver of a milk tanker is alert and talking after the 18-wheeler overturned twice Friday on Route 82, spilling 30,000 pounds of milk onto the side of the road, police said.

The crash was reported at about 3 p.m., just south of Finkle Road.

Ronnie Hare, 36, of Poughkeepsie, was driving south on Route 82 when he lost control of the 18-wheel tractor-trailer and drove off the right shoulder of the road, rolling over twice before it came to a stop, according to a statement from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Police would not comment on the cause of the crash Friday, citing an ongoing investigation.

Hare complained of neck, chest and abdominal injuries, police said. He was airlifted to Albany Medical Center for treatment.

The tractor-trailer was lying on its side on the road Friday evening as firefighters cleaned up debris. Ancram firefighters and Community Rescue Squad cut the roof off the truck’s cab to free Hare, police said.

“He was conscious, alert and talking,” DeRocha said at the scene. “He was complaining of neck and chest injuries.”

No one else was injured in the crash. The tractor-trailer was totaled, police said.

The accident remains under investigation. State Route 82 between Dam Road and Dutchess county Route 199 was closed at 5:30 p.m. while towing company Hillsdale Repairs worked to remove the tractor-trailer from the road, police said.

“New York State Encon [state Department of Environmental Conservation] is on their way to oversee the incident and see if there is any cleanup that is needed,” DeRocha said.

The tractor-trailer is registered to Staats Transporting Inc., of Milan. The tanker was hauling approximately 30,000 pounds of milk, police said.

It was unclear Friday if the adjacent homeowner’s lawn was damaged when the truck overturned, DaRocha said.

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
