Gas pipeline worker Jose de Jesus Diaz-Valenzuela, 38, with Pumpco Pipeline Construction crushed to death by heavy construction equipment in Williamson County, Texas

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) – A Dallas-area man who died at a gas pipeline construction site west of Georgetown on Saturday evening has been identified by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.

They said Jose de Jesus Diaz-Valenzuela, 38, is the man killed after he was struck by a construction machine.

It happened at about 5 p.m. along the pipeline located two miles off of SH 29 halfway between Interstate 35 and Ronald Reagan Boulevard.

Sheriff Chody said that about 20 workers with Pumpco Pipeline Construction out of Giddings were at the site when the accident occurred.

The pipeline had been placed and covered with soil. Workers were smoothing dirt on top of the new pipeline when a driver operating a large construction machine did not see one of two workers walking next to it and ran into him.

Diaz-Valenzuela survived the initial crash but died at the scene a short time later after medics arrived. Authorities have ordered an autopsy.

Sheriff Chody said all initial signs indicate this was an accident, but an investigation is underway to make the final determination.

OSHA has shut down the work site while they investigate.
