Troopers: Man, 73, boy, 11, die in fiery crash in DeLand

DeLAND, Fla. - A man and a boy were killed and another man was critically injured Thursday evening in a fiery crash in DeLand, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
A man, whose identity wasn't released, was driving a Chevy Camaro at a high rate of speed shortly after 9:45 p.m. on North Spring Garden Avenue near Cascades Park Boulevard, Sgt. Kim Montes said.
A 73-year-old DeLand man drove his Chevy pickup truck through the intersection in the pathway of the car and the vehicles collided, Montes said.
Investigators said the Chevy pickup truck caught fire as it overturned and became engulfed in flames. Both he and his 11-year-old passenger, neither of whom was publicly identified, died at the crash scene, troopers said.
Troopers said the car also caught fire. The driver was flown to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach in critical condition.
Charges are pending, Montes said.
The crash remains under investigation.

However, the number of injured is rising. Roughly 2.5 million are injured (yes, you read it correctly – 2.5 million injured) per year. That is, 1 percent (1%) of the population that is eligible to drive is injured every year.
It is worse than a war zone out there.

The crash was reported on Cascade Park Boulevard just after 9:45 p.m. Thursday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Troopers said a Chevy Camaro was traveling at a high rate of speed toward Cascade Parks Boulevard on State Road 15A. As the Camaro entered the Cascade Parks Boulevard intersection, it collided with a Chevy pickup.
The pickup flipped and caught fire and both occupants were killed, troopers said. Their names have not been released, but troopers said they are a 73-year-old man and an 11-year-old boy, both from DeLand.
Trooper said the Camaro also caught fire and the driver was critically injured.
