FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Freeway 99 was reopened early Tuesday morning after flooding from a water main rupture closed the road overnight. CHP said the water line broke after a construction contractor hit the pipe.

Overnight, both directions of the freeway between Clinton Avenue and Shaw Avenue were closed and traffic was backed up.

The water started flowing around 9 p.m. on Monday. Crews worked tirelessly since then to get the water mopped up.

The flooding caused major traffic jams overnight. Before the freeway was closed, many cars attempted to drive through the water, but did not make it. The flooding also caused several accidents.

CHP officers are reminding people to take precaution when in flooded areas especially as the rainy season approaches. They say the water can be deceiving.
