FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Authorities say the semi truck was traveling on Northbound 99 south of Highland Avenue shortly before 6:30 this morning. For unknown reasons, the driver veered off the highway falling several feet to the roadway below and catching fire.

One person, believed to be the driver of the truck, died at the scene. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) says no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

"Highland is a pretty well traveled roadway. And really it was lucky that no one else was here, and not sure if there was anyone nearby that saw it, but obviously it could have been a lot worse," said Officer Axel Reyes, CHP.

The truck was carrying orange juice, but it's unknown where it was headed or who was driving.

The truck was leaking other fluids as well, so environmental health was also called out to the scene.

Highland Avenue was closed for several hours while authorities cleaned up.
