A two-alarm fire broke out in Boston’s South End Tuesday afternoon, the Boston Fire Department said on Twitter.
Around 3:33 p.m., firefighters responded to the area of 73 Rutland St., near Tremont Street, for a report of a rooftop fire at a brownstone, according to the department. The four-story building has four units, with one per floor.
Most of the heavy fire was put out by around 4:08 p.m., but firefighters were still checking for hot spots, the department said. No injuries were reported as of Tuesday evening.
The fire extended to 71 and 75 Rutland St., and electricity was off in all three buildings, with water damage to the ceilings. The department estimated the total damage at $500,000.
A photo posted on Twitter by the department shows some of the propane tanks located on the roof. The department pointed out that one of the tank’s valves is broken off.
The broken will be part of the investigation into the cause of the fire, the department said.
