OSHA investigating liquid asphalt accident in Framingham

FRAMINGHAM, MASS. – A federal agency is investigating an accident that left two men with second-degree burns after being sprayed with hot liquid asphalt.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Andover office began its investigation on Tuesday after two employees of All States Asphalt Inc. of Sunderland were severely burned while working at the Department of Public Works yard on Franklin Street, spokesman Edmund Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald said the company is being investigated, but there is no estimate of a completion date. He said investigations usually take several weeks.
On Tuesday, two men – one age 56 and one age 31 – were transferring the approximately 400-degree liquid asphalt from one vehicle to another to be used on roadwork on Salem End Road, authorities said. All States Asphalt Inc. is doing contract work for the town.
The older man was sprayed in his face, hands, arms and upper body, while the younger man suffered burns to his hands and arms. Both were taken to Boston hospitals to be treated. Their conditions were not available on Friday.
