A crash involving an overturned big rig on Interstate 5 near McBean Parkway caused an eight-hour sig alert and sent one to the hospital Monday afternoon.
The big rig's trailer overturned after it collided with the center divider going northbound on the I-5 at approximately 2:09 p.m., a representative from the Newhall California Highway Patrol said.
According to a report from CHP, the overturned trailer came to rest over the right embankment of the freeway, blocking the right shoulder. A 2007 Chevrolet was also involved in the accident; however, the sequence of these events is still under investigation.
The trailer part of the big rig remained turned on its side and began leaking diesel fuel in the right shoulder of I-5. Both Newhall CHP personnel and Los Angeles County Fire resources responded to the crash, according to the CHP report.
According to county representative Joseph Napoli, Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Engine 150, a hazmat team, was available to help with the cleanup, but they were not needed at the scene.
Newhall CHP said the crash blocked the two right lanes on the freeway and caused 350-feet of guardrail damage. The 56-year-old driver of the Chevrolet was transported to Henry Mayo Hospital with minor injuries.
CHP issued a sig alert on the freeway for approximately eight hours while the wreckage and oil were cleared.
Crews could still be seen working on repairs and cleanup to the right shoulder of I-5 near McBean Parkway Tuesday morning.
