WAKE COUNTY (WTVD) -- An overturned tanker truck has blocked the Interstate 40 westbound ramp to US-1 south in Wake County.

Images from Chopper11 HD show the truck overturned on its side along a curve in the ramp at exit 293, near Buck Jones Road in Cary.

An ambulance was seen taking a person away in a stretcher, but the extent of their injuries are unknown at this time.

Tanker is leaking a dark liquid, which may be liquid asphalt. Hazmat crews are working to clean up the mess.

It is unclear what caused the accident around 5:45 a.m. and when the ramp will reopen.  The most likely cause is the higher speed used by the driver to take the ramp.  These tanker trucks can only withstand a 0.2 g before they rollover.  If the fluid is sloshing, then the g required is even less.  Drivers of these tanker trucks need to be very careful when they go around bends or change directions.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the area. For those traveling east, you may want to take exit 289 to Wade Ave. to access I-440 to US-1.
