RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) -- A water main leak caused a road to buckle and turn into a sinkhole in front of a high school in Riverside.

Riverside Public Utility crews were looking for the leak when they noticed a portion of 3rd Street in front of JW North High School buckling around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Crews said the sinkhole was about 15 feet by 15 feet and 4 feet deep. They dug through the street to reach a 10-inch water main that had leaked. By Thursday morning, crews had repaired the pipe, but would need to refill the hole and repair surrounding parts of the street that also began buckling.

The repairs were expected to be completed by 4 p.m.
