Hancock County, ILLINOIS

A woman was seriously injured after driving off the road in Hancock County and crashing into a tree.

The 28-year-old was heading westbound on Illinois Route 9, just east of 2650 N, when she went off the road at a curved section of the roadway, according to a statement from the Illinois State Police. Her 2006 GMC Envoy headed southwest “with no evidence of braking for 300 yards.”

After driving through a small fence, police said the Envoy stopped when the driver ran into a tree.

Police said the crash happened on Saturday, July 2, 2016, sometime overnight or in the early morning. The crash was reported around 10:15 a.m. by someone who discovered the crash.

The driver was trapped inside, and was seriously injured, police said. She was airlifted to the hospital for treatment.

Investigators say failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and improper lane usage are what caused the crash.
