ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7)
The Roanoke City Fire Department says a lightning strike caused a house fire Tuesday afternoon.
One Roanoke firefighter also had to be hospitalized after falling down an elevator shaft while responding to the fire.
It happened at a home in the 3900 block of Bosworth Dr SW in Roanoke.
That firefighter -- whose name has not been released -- is expected to make a full recovery.
We've also learned a second firefighter sustained a minor eye injury but is also expected to be okay.
It was a dramatic scene - flames through the roof when firefighters responded. We're told the firefighter fell through the home's elevator shaft on the side of the home, where smoke was the thickest.
The firefighter was able to walk out of the home with the help of other firefighters. It's policy for firefighters who are injured to get checked out, though Roanoke Fire-EMS spokesperson Tiffany Bradbury says the firefighter is expected to make a full recovery.
The homeowners are devastated but happy that they and their dogs are OK.
Damage estimates to the home are set at $400,000.

A Roanoke firefighter was taken to the hospital.
