PITT COUNTY, NC (WITN) - Firefighters battled a four alarm fire in Pitt County Monday afternoon in which all available firefighters were called out.
Flames were shooting through the roof when firefighters arrived around 4:30 p.m. at the brick home on Mills Road, just off Black Jack Simpson Road.
When WITN arrived, flames were shooting some 30 feet in the air. The roof of the one-story home collapsed, forcing firefighters out of the home.
In addition to four fire departments, an ambulance was also at the scene. The heat index was 103° at the time.
Black Jack Fire Chief Corey Handley says no one was home when firefighters arrived and no one was injured. The chief said a rehabilitation center was set up for firefighters due to the extreme heat.
The home is a total loss, and Handley says the fire marshal will investigate the cause.
