At approximately 3:04 a.m., the College Mound Volunteer Fire Department (CMVFD) responded to the 14800 block of SH 243 for a truck which veered off the highway, struck a tree, and had caught fire, CMVFD Safety Officer Terry Van Sickle Sr. told inForney.com.

Firefighters arrived on scene to a fully engulfed pickup truck.

The male driver in his 20s, although seriously injured, was able to escape the burning truck and was later airlifted to a Dallas-area trauma center, according to Van Sickle Sr. He is expected to recover from his injuries.

While firefighters were extinguishing the burning truck, a small explosion occurred which sent hot pieces of debris flying — which struck one firefighter.

“While his protective clothing prevented serious injury, he was transported by ambulance to a local hospital to be evaluated,” stated Van Sickle Sr. “He was treated in the emergency room and released.”
