UPDATE: 2 injured in Phillipsburg house explosion

A house exploded Saturday afternoon in Phillipsburg, damaging an adjacent building and forcing the closure of nearby streets.

Debris was scattered into the road from the home at 74 Fillmore Str. There was no smoke visible from the wreckage.

Mayor Stephen Ellis said authorities smelled a gas odor around the explosion site. It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured or missing.

Residents were outside their homes crowding around the police tape strung across the streets. One person said they saw the blast as she was out running errands. The woman said she came around the corner and "it just blew.
