SNOHOMISH, Wash. - A Mount Vernon man was struck and killed while trying to make an unsafe U-turn on Highway 9 Friday morning near Northwest Snohomish, the Washington State Patrol reports.

State troopers and medics responded to the scene, on State Route 9 just north of the Highway 2 interchange, at about 6:25 a.m. after receiving reports of a serious crash.

A Dodge Ram pickup and a blue Toyota Echo had collided at the scene, and the driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the State Patrol. He was later identified as Michael J. Holloway, 56, of Mount Vernon.

A preliminary investigation found that the Toyota was heading south on Highway 9 when the driver encountered heavy traffic. The driver attempted a U-turn and was struck by the pickup in the northbound lane.

The State Patrol listed the cause of the crash as an "unsafe U-turn."

The pickup driver, a 57-year-old Lake Stevens man, was found to be not at fault and no charges are pending, the State Patrol reports.

Both vehicles were totaled in the crash.

The northbound lane of Highway 9 was blocked at the scene during the cleanup and investigation and has since reopened.
