The 1998-built cruise vessel Carnival Elation experienced a power outage in the early morning hours on Monday off the east coast of Florida, the vessel’s owner Carnival Cruise Line told World Maritime News.
According to the company, the cruise ship “experienced a short power outage starting at around 1.45 am Monday morning,” after which the ship’s technicians restored power aboard the 70,367 gross ton ship.
“The ship arrived at its homeport of Jacksonville at approximately 9.30 am yesterday morning, slightly behind schedule,” the cruise line said.
Namely, the passengers aboard the vessel were notified of the issue by the vessel’s captain, who also informed them that there was no concern at the time. Some of the passengers reportedly decided to prepare in case of an emergency and took life vests and went to the deck.
The exact cause behind the loss of power aboard the ship, which was left adrift some 60 miles off the coast for almost an hour, is still unknown.
Carnival added that Carnival Elation departed yesterday afternoon on a five-day voyage as scheduled, part of its year-round four- and five-day cruise program from Jacksonville.
According to AIS data from Marine Traffic, the cruise ship, capable of carrying 2,054 guest, is currently en route to the port of Half Moon Cay, Bahamas.
