WHARTON (KTRK) -- A major fire caused damage to the Briar Pointe Apartments at 1717 Briar Lane in Wharton on Tuesday night.

The fire broke out just before 6:30pm and burned for nearly six hours before firefighters finally got it under control.

The Wharton Police Department confirmed that 55 units were damaged by fire or water.

81 residents have been made homeless and The Red Cross was on the scene and helping all the families affected by the fire.

It took more than 75 firefighters to get this under control and 10 of those firefighters were treated for heat, while one had to be transported to a local hospital but he had non-life threatening injuries.

The good news is that all residents are accounted for and none of them were injured.

The cause of the fire is still underway and the State Fire Marshall is being called in to investigate the situation.
