State police are continuing to investigate a two-car rollover accident on Interstate 84 in Fishkill Saturday that left one person dead.

Information about the deceased, a Poughquag woman in her 80s, was being withheld pending notification of next of kin, according to state police spokeswoman Melissa McMorris.

Two other people were injured. All three were transported to St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, where one driver was pronounced deceased on arrival, according to police.

The occupants of the other vehicle were an adult and their child from Mahopac.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. on the westbound lanes, just east of Exit 13, which intersects Route 9.

An eyewitness who was traveling in the eastbound lanes said he saw two cars just as they were colliding, one striking the other from behind.

"One was trying to cut over and the car behind hit the quarter panel (of the car in front)," said Samuel Thomison, 37, of Pleasant Valley.

Thomison said the car in front spun sideways and then flipped over the guardrail by the shoulder, dropping out of sight.

The other vehicle, he said, also flipped and slid upside down along the highway until coming to a stop.

Thomison said he stopped his car, ran across the median and down the embankment. He said he crawled into the car and found a single occupant, a female driver.

"She was moaning," he said.

He said the woman was wearing her seat belt and that air bags had deployed.

He said he stayed with the driver until first responders arrived.

State police confirmed the driver of that vehicle died.

The accident and subsequent investigation forced the closure of one lane and caused a 5-mile traffic delay.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to call 845-677-7300.
