CALGARY – The driver of a semi escaped with non-life threatening injuries after his truck crashed into a CP Rail freight train Wednesday about 20 kilometres outside of Vulcan.
EMS was called to the scene near the Hamlet of Brant, northwest of Vulcan shortly after 10 a.m. By the time they arrived the driver of the truck, a 54-year-old Calgary man, had managed to get out of the truck’s cab; he was flown to hospital by STARS.
EMS said his injuries, while not life-threatening, were serious.
The impact of the crash was so severe it separated the cab from the trailer; the cab ended up on one side of the train and the trailer on the other.
None of the crew members on the train was hurt.
Workers were expected to remain at the scene at the intersection of township road 182 and Highway 804 for several hours while RCMP determined what exactly the train was carrying.
Vulcan is about 130 kilometres southeast of Calgary.
