1 dead, 1 injured after pedestrians struck by car in Delaware


Police say a man and woman are hospitalized in critical condition after being struck by a car in New Castle, Delaware.
Police say a woman is dead and a man is injured after being struck by a car in New Castle, Delaware.

State troopers believe the car was traveling eastbound when it hit 36-year-old Melissa Livingstone and 37-year-old Robert Spencer in the roadway.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday on the 700 block of Basin Road.

Police say Livingstone and Spencer were not using a marked cross-walk at the time of the crash. They stepped directly into the path of a Toyota Corolla.

The impact of the crash forced Livingstone onto the windshield of the car.

She was then thrown into the left hand lane of the road.

Spencer was thrown to the ground upon impact.

The 51-year-old driver of the striking vehicle did stop nearby.

Both victims were taken to Christiana Hospital. Livingston was pronounced dead at the hospital. Spencer is listed in serious condition.

The striking vehicle's driver was not hurt.

Another pedestrian was struck and killed in the same area two weeks ago.

Police say the scene of the crash is very dark and there are no street lights.

The southbound lanes of Basin Road were closed for approximately two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
