Woman in wheelchair struck, killed in collision with car in Ottawa, Canada

Ottawa Police Service. JULIE OLIVER / Ottawa Citizen

A woman has died after she was struck by a vehicle while she was driving a motorized wheelchair near the intersection of Montreal Road and Elwood Street late Sunday night.

The Ottawa Paramedic Service said passersby, including a doctor from the Montfort Hospital emergency department, tried to revive the 60-year-old woman when she was struck just before midnight.

The woman had suffered multi-system trauma and was without vital signs when paramedics, police and the firefighters arrived. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision.

The intersection was closed to traffic for most of the evening but was re-opened early Monday morning.

Alcohol was not a factor in the collision, said police who are investigating.
Anyone with information on the collision is asked to contact Ottawa Police at 613-236-1222 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477 (TIPS) or toll free at 1-800-222-8477.

Why she would be driving at night with her wheelchair?  Some people simply are either stupid or careless.
