Man charged after crashing into three vehicles in Shirley
SHIRLEY, N.Y. (WABC) --
Around 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, Kendell Owens, 31, was driving a 2005 Infiniti east on Montauk Highway at William Floyd Parkway when his vehicle struck a 2006 Chrysler Sebring, driven by Richard Garcia, 45, of Shirley. Garcia had been northbound on William Floyd Parkway. Garcia was taken by ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
According to the Suffolk County Police Department, Owens was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and leaving the scene of an incident without reporting involving a fatality. He was taken to Brookhaven where he was treated for minor injuries and released. He is scheduled for arraignment later Wednesday in Central Islip.
Alyssa Toth, 23, of Mastic, was northbound in a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze on William Floyd behind Garcia and crashed into his car after the initial collision. She was taken to an area hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and released.
Xavier Patino, 37, of Queens, was driving a 2011 BMW X6 west on Montauk Highway and was struck by the first two vehicles. Patino and his four passengers, including an infant boy and a 2-year-old girl, were taken to an area hospital and later released.
Officers pursued Owens on foot for a short distance, cornering him in a parking lot next to Burger King, said Detective Sgt. James Madden of the Suffolk police vehicular crimes unit.
William Floyd Parkway was closed for about a block in both directions for the police investigation.
