FRANKLIN, N.H. —Route 11 was closed Monday morning after a flatbed truck crashed into a lake.
The truck went into Webster Lake around 10:45 a.m.
According to fire officials, the truck was traveling eastbound alongside the lake and ended up hitting a trailer attached to an unoccupied pickup truck on the side of the road, causing the flatbed truck to veer into the lake.
"It sounded like an explosion," said Dick O'Connell, a neighbor. "We thought maybe a boat had exploded in the lake or something."
The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. He was seen standing minutes after the crash.
"The dock that he hit just yesterday was loaded with little kids," O'Connell said. "Fortunately it wasn't a weekend and everything was empty."
O'Connell said there have been several accidents in front of his house, but Monday's accident was the first time he saw a vehicle end up in a lake.
"We're very lucky there's no other vehicles involved in this," said Sgt. Daniel Poirier of the Franklin Police Department.
As a precaution, a boom was put around the truck to keep fuel from spreading further into the lake. By the afternoon, Department of Environmental Services crews began pumping out the fuel so the truck could be removed from the lake safely.
"There is a slight sheen in the water and we don't believe it is anything other than fuels that may be on the engine that were washed up from the water," said Capt. Gary Hicks of the Franklin Fire Department.
The road was closed for several hours after the accident. As of 5 p.m., the road was still closed.
