A fire at Penn Station Newark briefly halted all Amtrak and NJ Transit rail service at the busy rail terminal this afternoon and left one track out of service for the evening commute.

That has resulted in 45-minute delays on Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line and Raritan Valley Line, because Track 2 is out of service, said Penny Hackett, a NJ Transit spokeswoman. Trains also will not stop at Track 2 in Penn Station, she said.

NJ Transit had put out a commuter alert around 3:30 p.m. about the disruption in train service. Amtrak spokesman Craig Schulz said rail service resumed with residual delays. The fire also briefly stopped Path Newark-World Trade Center trains, which are also back in service.

"A temporary hold was placed on all tracks to allow fire department personnel to do their work," he said. "The hold has since been lifted and train operations have resumed."

NJ Transit has implemented systemwide cross honoring of NJ Transit rail tickets with PATH, NJ Transit and private carrier buses.
