ANDREWS, SC (SouthStrandNews) –

An Andrews teenager is dead after what authorities called a “freak accident” involving an all-terrain vehicle.

On Monday, Aug. 17, 15-year-old Joshua Hamilton Powell was killed after he was thrown from an ATV while he was driving off Lambert Road in Williamsburg County.

According to Williamsburg County Deputy Coroner William Horton, Josh was driving his ATV through a field on Monday afternoon when he hit a soft spot of earth while making a turn.

“He turned it sharply,” Horton said. “He was traveling at a pretty good clip and he flipped. When he flipped, (the ATV) landed on him.”

Horton said Joshua suffered “massive head trauma” when the ATV fell on top of him, which proved to be fatal. The police did not say whether the boy was wearing a helmet or had other safety harnesses.

“It was a freak accident,” Horton said.  But according to Murphy's Law, whatever can go wrong, will eventually go wrong.  So be prepared for the worst.

Josh was a former Rosemary Middle School student. He was homeschooled last year and was preparing to enter his second year of homeschooling.

He is survived by his parents, Ken and Rhonda Powell, as well as a sister, Tiffany, and grandparents, Randy and Doris Powell and Shirley Jordan.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 1 p.m. at Andrews First Pentecostal Holiness Church, located at 112 Magnolia Ave., with the Revs. Dean Baber and Thomas W. Wallace II officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the beginning of the service.
