Four people were killed when a plane crashed Friday night near the Adirondack Regional Airport.
State Police in Ray Brook said they got the call that a civilian plane went down at around 6:30 p.m.
Troopers said the plane was completely destroyed, and on fire when they arrived.
When the Saranac Lake Fire Department and other fire departments put out the flames, four bodies were found in the wreckage.
The plane crashed about one half mile northwest of the Adirondack Regional Airport in Lake Clear.
Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill told WPTZ NewsChannel 5 he did not know if the plane was landing or taking off when it crashed.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
Investigators have not said who owned the plane or what may have caused the crash. Based on the registration number of the plane, N187JP, the owner and operation is listed as
Majestic Air LLC.
Authorities have not yet identified the four victims.
The plane "came down in a fairly vertical position," and "there's not a lot left of the aircraft," Franklin County Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill said.
Officials had to walk about three-quarters of a mile to reach the crash site, which about about half a mile into the woods.
First responders secured the scene and were waiting for National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration officials to begin their investigation into the crash.
State Police asked anyone who witnesses the crash to call 518-897-2000.
Three people died when another plane crashed short of the runway at the Adirondack Regional Airport in July 2014.
The Adirondack Regional Airport is about an hour from Plattsburgh and offers daily commercial flights to Boston.

On August 7, 2015, at approximately 6:30 pm, State Police in Ray Brook were notified of a civilian plane that went down just north of the Adirondack Airport in Lake Clear. State Police Aviation located the downed aircraft approximately one half mile northwest of the airport and Troopers and Investigators responded to the crash site and found the aircraft completely destroyed.
Local fire departments responded to
extinguish the flames. Four persons were located deceased among the
wreckage. Investigation into the cause of the crash and identification
of those on board is ongoing.
The scene is being secured overnight
pending arrival of the FAA and NTSB, along with the Troop B Forensic
Identification Unit to process the scene. State Police were also
assisted at the scene by NY State Encon Police and NY Forest Rangers,
the Franklin County Sheriff's Department and Office of Emergency
Services and local airport personnel. State Police ask if anyone
witnessed the crash to call 518-897-2000.

The aircraft impacted wooded terrain near Lake Clear northwest of Adirondack Regional Airport (KSLK), Saranac Lake, New York. The airplane was destroyed by the impact with terrain and the post-impact fire. The four occupants onboard the aircraft received fatal injuries.
