HENRICO, Va. —

One person was killed in an early morning crash in Henrico County’s East End, according to police. Officers shut down Williamsburg Road between Eanes and Cavedo Lane after the fatal crash.

The accident happened just before 4 a.m. Sunday along the 2400 block on Williamsburg Road.

The driver of a red car lost control, hit a utility pole, then got out of the car and ran into someone’s yard before the car burst into flames, according to witnesses at the scene.

One person inside the car didn’t make it out and died at the accident site, police said.

Neighbors said the sound of the crash woke them up but they were unable to make it in time to help.

“When we got up the car was engulfed and by the time I got my clothes on to run across the street, I thought I could be of some assistance, my neighbors were standing in the yard and told me it was too late,” said neighbor Curtis Bowman.

The accident knocked out power for about 1,000 people in the area. It was restored around 10:30 Sunday morning.

Police have not released the name of the victim.

According to neighbors they’ve seen several accidents in the area and have petitioned to have a stop light put up, but Sunday’s fiery crash was the worst they had ever seen.
