TERREBONNE, Ore. -
A Crooked River Ranch man was flown to a Bend hospital Friday evening after he tried to pass an ATV on his motorcycle in Terrebonne and struck the ATV as its operator tried to turn left, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said Saturday.
The motorcyclist, Dustin Cartner, 33, was in fair condition Saturday at St. Charles Bend, according to a house supervisor.

Deputies and Redmond Fire Department medics were dispatched around 5:30 p.m. to the reported injury crash on Northwest 27th Street at Lower Bridge Road, said Sgt. Jayson Janes.

An initial investigation found Cartner’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle was heading north on 27th Street from Lower Bridge Way and was trying to pass a Polaris ATV operated by Steve Fox, 66, accompanied by his grandson as a passenger, Janes said.

Fox tried to make a left-hand turn into a large driveway when he was struck by Cartner’s motorcycle, deputies said.

Cartner, who was wearing a helmet, was flown to the Bend hospital by air ambulance. Fox was evaluated at the crash scene by paramedics and his young passenger was treated at the scene, Janes said.

Janes said in a news release that “alcohol and speed are possible factors in this crash.” He also noted the ATV was not registered for street use.

No citations have been issued at this time as the crash remains under investigation, he said.
