David Wiseman, a 50-year-old Rankin Inlet taxi operator, is accused of making up a company to try and defraud his insurance company of $56,000 after a furnace fire damaged his business in December 2013,

The owner of S & G Taxi is charged with falsifying books and documents and filing fraudulent or misleading receipts.

Wiseman's insurance company, Aviva Insurance, hired an independent insurance adjuster to investigate approximately $347,000 in claims, following a fire to his taxi business.

According to Aviva Canada, the independent adjuster found that a company Wiseman claimed he hired to rent industrial heaters in order to keep his business running was made up.

"The independent adjuster handling the claim on Aviva Canada's behalf observed an inaccurate rental start date and a fictional vendor name listed on the invoice for the heaters. Additionally, he noted that a cleanup of the property did not take place," read the release.

"Aviva Canada's subsequent investigation found evidence to suggest that Wiseman misrepresented his loss by allegedly submitting false invoices and attempting to defraud the company of approximately $56,000."

Aviva Insurance contacted Nunavut RCMP, who launched its own investigation in December of 2014.

"As a result of that investigation, an individual, a 50-year-old male has been charged on two counts of fraud," said RCMP Sgt. Yvone Niego. Wiseman is scheduled to appear in a Rankin Inlet court August 10th.
