2 hazmat situations in Va. Beach; some evacuations
Staff, 13News Now Hazmat crews were called to Ferrellgas at 109 Freight Lane around 8:10 a.m.
Firefighters say a 2800 gallon tank of propane was leaking.
"There is a temporary patch on the leak and crews are working to determine how to safely offload the propane to another tank," said Battalion Chief Amy Valdez.
No injuries were reported.
Meantime, Norfolk hazmat crews helped out at another situation in Virginia Beach. Crews were called to Air Rail Ave. because a package/large box was on fire outside the UPS building. Valdez says a label on the package said Nitric Acid.
The package contained six 2.5 Liter bottles of Nitric Acid. The fire was to the packaging, cart, and materials brought to clean up the leaking product before it caught fire, Barakey explained.
Officials say one worker at the site was injured and was taken to the hospital for treatment after being exposed to chemicals. The person was complaining of breathing difficulty, District Chief Michael J. Barakey told 13News Now.com.
No evacuations were needed. Crews expected to be on scene until about 10:30 a.m.
Meantime, a boom is in place in the storm drain and a contractor will clean up the residual material. Officials with the Va. Dept. of Emergency Management will be on the scene as well.
