Driver cited for failure to stop at red light in Millsboro, DE 4-vehicle crash leaving 15 injured

A driver was cited after 15 people were injured Sunday in a four-vehicle crash in Millsboro, caused by his running a red light, state police said.

One of those hurt – a 40-year-old woman from New Castle – was seriously injured and flown by Delaware State Police helicopter to Christiana Hospital, Master Cpl. Jeffrey R. Hale said Sunday night. The other 14 suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, he said.

The crash was reported at 11:54 a.m. on Du Pont Boulevard (U.S. 113) at Dagsboro Road (Del. 20), closing the highway at Handy Road for 11/2 hours.

Walter L. Warrington, 79, of Frankford, was cited for failure to stop at a red light after they say he caused the crash by turning into the path of an oncoming mini-van carrying nine people, all injured.

Warrington's car also hit two other vehicles, one with three passengers, that were stopped at the same intersection, Hale said.

Warrington was northbound when he tried to turn left onto Handy Road through the red light, Hale said.

As his car began to cross the highway's southbound lanes, he turned into the path of a mini-van driven by Robert W. Stabley, 34, of New Castle, Hale said.

The front of Stabley's van hit the side of Warrington's car, which then hit a pickup truck driven by Shakila T. Hudson, 22, of Frankford, as it was stopped on eastbound Handy Road, he said.

Warrington's car then hit another car stopped on eastbound Handy Road, driven by Benita S. McCray, 27, also of Frankford, Hale said. Warrington's car rolled to its side before stopping, he added.

All four drivers – all properly restrained – were taken by emergency medical services to Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, he said.

The most-seriously injured woman was a passenger in Stabley's mini-van, Hale said. His seven other passengers were taken by emergency medical services to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.

Two passengers in Hudson's vehicle also were taken to Beebe Medical Center, while a third was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Hale said.
