84-year-old female driver struck and killed a Lincoln County, WI flagman on Highway 17 in Merrill

Lincoln County, Wisconsin highway worker hit, killed




A Lincoln County highway worker died Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a car.

At 2:35 p.m., a person called 911 and reported a county highway worker had been struck by a car on Highway 17, north of Smith Road, in the town of Merrill, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff Department. 

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and learned a 50-year-old man was flagging the southbound traffic and had a stop sign up when an 84-year-old woman struck him.

The woman's vehicle then entered the east side ditch of Highway 17, rolled several times and came to rest in a creek, according to the release. The Merrill Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to remove her from the vehicle.

The man was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, Merrill, where he was pronounced dead, according to the release. The woman also was taken to Good Samaritan with unknown injuries.

The Wisconsin State Patrol assisted the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department with a reconstruction at the crash scene. Highway 17 was shut down for almost five hours.

The crash remains under investigation.
