Six people have been transported to local hospitals after a plane caught fire at EAA AirVenture grounds in Oshkosh.

ThedaCare says they are treating three male patients from the crash–one person is critical and the other two are in fair condition, according to a spokesperson with ThedaCare.  One of the patients was airlifted from the scene.
Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh says they are treating three patients from the scene. All three people are listed in good condition, according to the hospital.
Two of Mercy’s patients were on board the plane. Another patient who was not on the plane was injured at the scene.

Thick, black smoke could be seen coming from the area of Runway 27 at Wittman Regional Airport where the Piper Malibu made a hard landing and caught fire about 7:45 a.m.

Four people were able to escape the plane, but a fifth person had to be rescued.
“Fortunately Oshkosh Fire Department has a permanent facility right here on the airport ground. They were there in probably about a minute and extracted that one individual,” said Dick Knapinski, Director of Communications for EAA AirVenture.

The east/west runway where the crash happened is still closed at this time. The north/south runway reopened about 10:30 a.m.
