2 injured in semi-truck crash onto train tracks in Idaho

NAMPA, IDAHO

Two men were hurt when a semi truck left the interstate and crashed onto the train tracks in Nampa Wednesday morning.

The crash happened at 12:45 a.m. just east of the Northside Boulevard exit. Idaho State Police say the semi was eastbound on I-84 when it veered off the roadway. The truck continued into the grass median between the eastbound and westbound lanes and down a 30-foot embankment before coming to rest on the train tracks.

The driver, 52-year-old Michael Willard, and his passenger, 58-year-old Randy Deans, were injured in the wreck. The men, both of whom are from North Carolina, were taken to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. Police say it's unclear whether either Willard or Deans was wearing a seatbelt.

Eastbound I-84 was completely blocked for 45 minutes after the wreck, and at least one lane was shut down until about 2:30 a.m.

According to Union Pacific, the tracks where the truck crashed are not very busy, and no trains had to be stopped or diverted. The track is out of service until the crash is cleared; railroad officials say they expect it to reopen later today.

The crash remains under investigation.
