DANVILLE — Two
construction workers suffered serious injuries after falling through the
roof of the old Brantly Steam Plant on Monument Street on Wednesday
morning.
The two employees fell about 40 feet to the ground and suffered head, chest and leg injuries. They were treated at the scene, transported to Danville Regional Medical Center and later airlifted to a Roanoke hospital with serious injuries.
The contract employees were working on the
demolition of the long-shuttered, coal-fired electric power plant. The
incident was reported at about 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, said Danville Fire
Department Battalion Chief Chris Key.
The Danville Police Department is investigating the incident.
The steam station was built in the late 1940s and decommissioned in 1979. Originally coal fired, it was converted to natural gas in the 1950s. A private contractor is demolishing the building for the city of Danville.
The fire department responded with two engines, a ladder truck, two command units, two support units and a fire marshal. The Danville Life Saving Crew and Danville Police Department provided assistance.
Twenty-two fire personnel were on scene for a little more than an hour.
