UPDATE - Advanced Disposal officials say the investigation
into the explosion at the Valley View Landfill in Decatur has been closed.
Officials say the FBI, Macon County Bomb Squad, and Secretary of State's Office have cleared the scene, and that the exact cause of the explosion remains unknown. However, officials say the explosion is likely attributed to a chemical reaction of household hazardous waste materials.
Advanced Disposal officials would like to remind residents and businesses that they do not accept hazardous waste items, including the following:
- Paints
- Motor Oil
- Fertilizers
- Fluorescent Light Bulbs
- Aerosol Cans
- Batteries
- Cleansers
- Insecticides

DECATUR, ILLINOIS
Advanced Disposal officials say they are investigating an
explosion that happened at their Valley View Municipal Solid Waste Landfill in
Decatur Friday morning.
Officials say at about 7:30 a.m., normal waste compaction operations were underway when an explosion happened on the working face of the landfill. No injuries were reported, and the only damage sustained was to the compactor. Officials also say the explosion did not impact the landfill's liner systems, as the explosion occurred about 50 feet above the liners.
At this time, the cause of the explosion is unknown, and Advanced Disposal is working with a third-party environmental remediation company to determine the cause of the explosion.
We will provide more information as it becomes available.
