Lauderdale man in critical condition after explosion of a barrel

MAY 12, 2015

FLORENCE, FLORIDA

A Lauderdale County man injured when a 55-gallon drum exploded Monday afternoon is in critical condition at Vanderbilt Hospital, officials said.
Tavia Smith, a spokeswoman for Vanderbilt, said George Eugene Carmack, 68, 6990 Alabama 157, Florence, is listed as critical in the hospital's trauma unit.
Emergency personnel said Carmack was suffering from burns from the explosion that took place at his residence, which is just north of the Underwood community near Meadow Grove Acres subdivision. The accident happened around 4 p.m. Monday.

"Apparently, he was using a grinder, trying to make a smoker out of a sealed 55-gallon barrel, when it exploded," said Sgt. Brad Potts, an investigator with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's office.

Carmack was taken to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence and then flown to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.

Poor fellow.  He should have vented the barrel prior to grinding.  Probably the barrel contained flammable substances that exploded. Hopefully he makes it.
