One person is dead, and another charged with murder after a
deadly crash in Georgetown involving a pickup truck and a bicycle, according to
Georgetown Police.
It happened around 4:30 p.m. Saturday on Lemons Mill Road
near the entrance to the Sutton Place subdivision.
According to police, the driver crossed over the line,
over-corrected, then hit the cyclist head on before fleeing the scene.
Police arrested the driver, Odilon Paz-Salvador, about three
miles away at a trailer park on Lisle Road.
The Fayette County Coroner's Office identified the bicyclist
as Mark Hinkel, 57, of Lexington.
Hinkel was participating in the Horsey Hundred when the
crash happened, event organizers told WKYT. The cyclist was finishing mile 99
of the 100 mile event, the race director said.
In the 38 years that the Horsey Hundred has been going on,
this is the first fatality at the event, organizers said.
The Horsey Hundred is an annual cycling event featuring a
century ride (100 miles). More than 2,000 people took part in the event.
Captain Robert Swanigan with Georgetown Police said
Paz-Salvador was driving under the influence.
Paz-Salvador has been charged with murder, wanton
endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident, Swanigan said.
The crash happened just hours after a deadly accident on
Interstate 64 in Scott County, making it already a tragic start to the holiday
weekend.
"Every year we come into this weekend praying that
things like this don't happen. Unfortunately they do," Swanigan said.
"Both of these – tragedies do not even come close to covering both of
these. The one this morning, and now this one. It's terrible anytime there's a
loss of life, but then something like this - it's just tragic."
